Microsoft Windows Server 2008

When looking for hosting, alot of people seem to neglect the idea of hosting in a Microsoft environment. In fact hosting on a Windows server 2008 isn’t all that much of a bad thing. I hear you saying. “Why”?

Well because it’s developed by Microsoft, bugs and exploits can be ironed out quickly enough, They do after all have lots of money and expertise to throw at such problems. Having been in the business of making software for so long. Microsoft can’t really be that much of a bad choice.

They are also quite powerful when it comes to doing their job, hence the reason why many Universities already switched over to Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

This is certainly an OS for your dedicated server you should be considering. As long as the scripts you intend to run are compatible with a Microsoft environment. (Most scripts have no problems with being hosted on a Microsoft server.) Read the rest of this entry »

Web N Walk, Mobile Internet and ….. Dongles!

Mobile internet has been getting bigger and bigger over the years here in the UK. Unlike the USA where mobile internet and video calling took off far better than here.

It seems that the new ‘Mobile Modem’ could be here to stay with lots of early adopters and thousands more expected to follow in the coming months. But whats the deal with all this fang dangled dongley technology? Well i am far from an expert on this subject but i do find it interesting.

Having used my sister in-laws laptop with one of these dongles attached i was quite surprised at the speeds it gave. I think if my memory serves me right it was one of the 3G network dongles.

The download speeds weren’t great. But considering i thought it was going to be like using dial up again. I was happy. The test file downloaded from my server at just over 85kbps. Far better than the 12kbps i was expecting.

The upload wasn’t exactly great, but hey who cares when you can sit in a field and get on the net.

3G isn’t the only network thats offering Web n Walk. So its best to shop around before committing to anything in the world of mobile internet. Different providers will have different packages with higher bandwidth limits.

Another thing to remember before signing up is check out what the costs are. By that i don’t mean costs per month. But costs for if you go over your bandwidth allowance. As although the per month cost may be low. The extra charges may be crippling in the long run.

Reinstalling led to having to reinstall again! Damn Outerinfo

The other day i spoke about reinstalling windows on this crazy ass laptop by HP. The reinstall went fine. Took most of the day which of course wasn’t fine but in the end it was completed and running just fine. That is of course until later on the same day the laptop got infected with a nasty piece of malware/adware.

How it got in i aren’t a 100% sure.

The nasty ass malware/adware that decided to live inside the laptop was created by Outerinfo and Yazzle. Uninstalling it wasn’t even an option as everytime i tried it was replicating itself on the system. Eventually it made windows not even recognize its own files and crashed the system. Meaning that for the second time within 48 hours i was forced to reinstall the laptop just to get the compter into a useable state.

My anti-virus was going nuts every other second and internet explorer kept popping up taking me to sites i wasn’t interested in. (I don’t even use internet explorer, My choice of browser is of course Firefox.)
